Artist Residency in Verpejos

In September Pepe was in residency at Verpejos in Kabelių, in Lithuania's very south. Here she was struck by the absence of fruit in a month that should be rich in apples, pears, and berries, a consequence, she learned, from a heavy May frost. With no fruit to forage, her fingers reached toward wool. In fact, Verpejos means “the spinners” in Lithuanian. Spinning is a practice that allows the mind to wander, to think, to mediate, and, for Pepe, was a chance to reflect on the tensions between presence and absence—a reoccurring theme in her research project about sea urchins.
