Kathleen Burke visits Augsburg
Kathleen Burke, a post-doctoral Marie Skłodowska-Curie fellow at the University of Lisbon, spent June in Augsburg as Off the Menu’s second visiting scholar. She joined the “Plates and Other Collisions” forum at the beginning of the month, presenting her ongoing research about fruit, ripeness, and colonialism. Following a PhD in history and food studies from the University of Toronto and postdocal positions in Shanghai and Singapore, her latest scholarship explores transimperial food cultures in the Portuguese and Dutch empires in the Indian Ocean. Since Philine and Pepe are entering the last year of their PhDs, the group had a session on postdoctoral possibilities, where Kathy generously shared her fluency in applications and how one project can grow into another.
